Fantastically Funny Photoshop Image Manipulations

Digital art programs like Photoshop can be used as a tool to create art in dozens of different styles. One of the art styles that Photoshop is most famous for is image manipulation. This is when a Photoshop artist takes one or more photographs and edits them in Photoshop to create a new image.

Creating funny Photoshop images isn't as easy as it looks. Photoshop artists need to be familiar with the program, have artistic talent and skill and have a keen eye for detail. Photoshop Machine Animals Tell a Love Story of Nature and Technology

Photoshop artists can create hybrid creatures out of anything. The following images show how digital artists have combined man-made technological creations with animals created by mother nature. The results are mechanical animals.

Photoshop VW Buggy: An Insect Car
Volkswagen's popular family car, the VW Beetle, has been spoofed in this Photoshopped machine animal hybrid. The artist has combined the original shape of the VW Beetle with the colors and accessories of an actual, living insect, creating a visual pun.

The Photoshop Toad Engine Croaks when Cranked

In this machine animal hybrid, the Photoshop artist has shown the "hood" of the toad vehicle (it's skull) as being open, revealing the frog's brain engine within. This robot creature combines organic elements, such as its skin, with machine components, such as having headlights for eyes.

According to knowyourmeme.com, head swaps were were first thought up by Something Awful's user Ryan Adams when he started a thread called "Swap Grandparents and Babies Heads!" The thread spawned dozens of Photoshop head swapped images, most notably of fathers and their babies. These later became known as "manbabies".

Fan art works are artists' renditions of their favorite celebrities or media characters. The aim of fan art is to show what it is about their idol that they appreciate, such as beauty, strength or humor. Fan art combinations merge two subjects to form an entirely new character. The tricky part is to express what it is about both of those characters that the artist appreciates.

Fan Art Spoofs
Character combinations are spoofs or parodies of popular characters, created with the intention of forming a humorous hybrid. The majority of character spoofs are non-official art works, though occasionally they are created on an official level by TV series producers as a means to entertain viewers.

Photoshop artists often combine human and animal trait to create funny man animal hybrids. These grinning creatures have been given human teeth to create an almost human smile.

The process of giving animals human characteristics is called personification. In literature, animals have been given human attributes in stories such as Watership Down and The Wind in the Willows. In visual media, animals are personified by depicting them as walking on their hind legs, or wearing human clothes. Photoshop and other image manipulation programs allow digital artists to create a photo-realistic depiction of man animal hybrids.
One of the more humorous personifications used by digital artists is the act of giving an animal a human smile. Human teeth have a distinctive shape, and while they look "normal" in a human head, they look rather silly when photoshopped into the face of an animal.

Windows to the Soul

Along with human teeth, Photoshop artists have added human eyes to further personify these animals. The results are funny Photoshop animal pictures that can be just a little bit unsettling at times. Human eyes can be painted in Photoshop or cut out of existing photos of people. The trickiest part of creating a realistic eye in Photoshop is giving the eyeball correct reflections. The better the reflection on the shiny surface of the eye, the more lifelike it becomes.

Photoshop Humanoids

A humanoid is a creature that has human characteristics. The term was first used in 1912 to describe skeletons that were physically similar to, but not exactly like, human skeletons. Humanoids appear often in science fiction novels and movies, as aliens or robots that resemble humans. Distinctive human features of humanoids areopposable thumbs and a bipedal bone structure (the bone structure of creatures that walk on two legs).

Creating Alien Photoshop Humanoids

Alien designers often show aliens as having two or three fingers along with an opposable thumb. In the picture above, the creature is further personified through the use of a human facial expression and clothing that resembles those worn by Earth men.

Humanoids are often depicted as having animal features such as claws, feathers or leathery skin. The humanoid above is a biped, yet the bone structure of the head and legs resembles a demonic, alien creature. This manimal belongs solely to the world of fantasy, bearing little resemblance to any Earth creature.

Digital artists can create believable humanoids by retaining the basic structure of a human physique, while adding alien features to the structure. In the image above, the artist has elongated the character's skull and added extra alien characteristics to the head and body. Even though the result is distinctly alien, this humanoid retains the human characteristics of recognizable facial features and basic human body structure.

Designing Robotic Photoshop Humanoids

This CG art work was created with photo manipulation. The artist morphed a photograph to create a female robot humanoid. Though this character is a machine, it retains the organic essence of a human woman.

The above design is a believable, photo-realistic portrayal of a robotic humanoid woman. By using intelligent lighting techniques, the artist has managed to create a 3D feel for the character. The feminine essence of the robot is emphasized through the artist's use of exaggeration - making certain parts of the robot woman's body larger or smaller than it would realistically be on a human figure.

There are thousands of manimal, hybrid and humanoid Photoshop designs online. The images the computer graphics artists create are limited only by their imagination and their skill.

Best Photoshopped Man Animal Hybrids

Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and sculptures depict creatures that are half-human, half-beast. Centuries later, artists are still fascinated by Manimals - man animal hybrids.

Ancient history, myths, legends, science fiction and fantasy stories abound with tales of half man, half animal creatures. Werewolves, centaurs and even the world famous Egyptian Sphinx are common composite creatures formed from the merging of two species.

Centaurs

In ancient Greek mythology, centaurs are hybrid animals that consist of a human torso attached to a horse's body, replacing the horse's head. Centaurs have been featured in a number of fantasy books and movies, including Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia.

Mermaids and Mermen

Mermaids are aquatic mythological creatures that are a hybrid of a human and a fish. In old English, the word'mere' meant 'sea', so a mer-maid is a sea maiden. Mermaids are popular creatures in folk lore and children's stories. These marine manimals have been popularised in modern culture by movies like Disney's The Little Mermaid and Splash.

Photoshop Man Animal Hybrids

For digital artists, imaging software programs like Adobe Photoshop and ZBrush open up a world of possibilities. Photographs of two different creatures, man or animal, can be merged to create entirely new creatures, animals that roam the realm of fantasy and imagination.

Hybrid creatures of myths and legends are traditionally half-human and half-animal, with a distinct point of joining between the two creatures, as seen earlier with centaurs and mermaids. Modern artists have taken this hybridization a step further, combining several areas of the two species' bodies to create a complete creature composition. In the picture above, the artist has combined the goat's hooves with the human hands, along with the bone structure of the face. Coarse hair and wiry muscles add to the half-man, half-goat design. In Greek mythology, this creature would be called a satyr.

Even though the artist has kept the original shape of the owl's eyes, pictured above, the eyes have a strangely human appeal. The most human part of this digital art piece is the nose that replaces the beak, though even this human characteristic has been successfully merged into the owl's features.

The human eye is drawn to the most recognizable features of a face; the eyes, nose and mouth. By superimposing these human features on an animal's face, digital artists can create an image that elicits an emotional response from the viewer, such as humor, through personification - portraying human emotions on a non-human creature or object.

The best Photoshop man animal hybrids are those which capture the perceived character of an animal. In the picture above, the artist has portrayed the regal, proud nature of a lion through posing the human features to reflect these character traits.

Primates and humans share a number of physical features, making these animals an ideal choice for using in CG human animal hybrids. In the picture above, the artist has replaced the human head and hand with that of an ape. The human objects used in this picture - clothing and a gun - complete the hybrid image.

The idea of using animal heads on a human body has been used since antiquity, often appearing in Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics and Greek and Roman mythology. Almost every ancient culture in the world created images of human bodies with animals heads or animal masks. The concept of hybridizing human and swine characteristics also appeared in George Orwell's Animal Farm.

Man animal hybrids can use a number of different creature characteristics, as seen above. This creature has crab legs and octopus tentacles with facial features that resemble a human's. Many comic and cartoon character designs incorporate animal physiology with human characteristics.

This picture is reminiscent of an Anne Geddes photograph, except that the human baby has a monkey's head and tail. As mentioned above, humans primates share a number of physical traits. The artist has used this to his advantage while adding to the human feel of the picture by giving the character human hair characteristics over the hairy features of a monkey.
