Photoshop Machine Animals Tell a Love Story of Nature and Technology

Photoshop artists can create hybrid creatures out of anything. The following images show how digital artists have combined man-made technological creations with animals created by mother nature. The results are mechanical animals.

Photoshop VW Buggy: An Insect Car
Volkswagen's popular family car, the VW Beetle, has been spoofed in this Photoshopped machine animal hybrid. The artist has combined the original shape of the VW Beetle with the colors and accessories of an actual, living insect, creating a visual pun.

Above: Instead of legs, the lady bug now has wheels. The carapace above the beetle's head forms the windshield of the insect car. This Photoshop artist has created a visual pun on the name of both the VW Beetle and the Lady Beetle.

The Photoshop Toad Engine Croaks when Cranked
In this machine animal hybrid, the Photoshop artist has shown the "hood" of the toad vehicle (it's skull) as being open, revealing the frog's brain engine within. This robot creature combines organic elements, such as its skin, with machine components, such as having headlights for eyes.

The Robo Lobster's a Crustacean with Cogs
To eat this robot lobster, you'd need to suffer from Pica, a mental illness that compels people to eat inedible objects. Though it is prone to rusting, the Photoshop machine lobster lives in harmony with its watery surroundings, dining on the metal hulls of sunken ships.

Gone Fishing in Photoshop
This Photoshop artist has combined an aquatic animal; a simple fish, with a submarine to create an organic underwater vessel. Unlike regular submarines, the Photoshop fish sub uses fins to propel itself.

Photoshop Chicken Machine Clucks and Clanks
The Photoshop robot chicken ain't no turkey, and is hoping to be featured in the next Transformers movie . While this rooster alarm clock may be able to play your favorite songs, it's not going to produce any eggs for breakfast.

Fly me to the Moon on a Hornet Motorbike
Tired of people driving close to your back bumper? You'll never need to worry about that if you're riding the Photoshop hornet bike. With its mean-looking features and nasty stinger, this buzzing motorbike will give you plenty of room on the roads, and if traffic is bad - it can fly you to work.

Photoshop Humanoids

A humanoid is a creature that has human characteristics. The term was first used in 1912 to describe skeletons that were physically similar to, but not exactly like, human skeletons. Humanoids appear often in science fiction novels and movies, as aliens or robots that resemble humans. Distinctive human features of humanoids areopposable thumbs and a bipedal bone structure (the bone structure of creatures that walk on two legs).

Creating Alien Photoshop Humanoids


Alien designers often show aliens as having two or three fingers along with an opposable thumb. In the picture above, the creature is further personified through the use of a human facial expression and clothing that resembles those worn by Earth men.

Humanoids are often depicted as having animal features such as claws, feathers or leathery skin. The humanoid above is a biped, yet the bone structure of the head and legs resembles a demonic, alien creature. This manimal belongs solely to the world of fantasy, bearing little resemblance to any Earth creature.


Digital artists can create believable humanoids by retaining the basic structure of a human physique, while adding alien features to the structure. In the image above, the artist has elongated the character's skull and added extra alien characteristics to the head and body. Even though the result is distinctly alien, this humanoid retains the human characteristics of recognizable facial features and basic human body structure.


Designing Robotic Photoshop Humanoids


This CG art work was created with photo manipulation. The artist morphed a photograph to create a female robot humanoid. Though this character is a machine, it retains the organic essence of a human woman.


The above design is a believable, photo-realistic portrayal of a robotic humanoid woman. By using intelligent lighting techniques, the artist has managed to create a 3D feel for the character. The feminine essence of the robot is emphasized through the artist's use of exaggeration - making certain parts of the robot woman's body larger or smaller than it would realistically be on a human figure.

There are thousands of manimal, hybrid and humanoid Photoshop designs online. The images the computer graphics artists create are limited only by their imagination and their skill.

Google Spider Bots Crawl Their Way into The Artworld

Googlebots are not physical robots but programmed systems that have been created by Google.com to “spider” the web, gathering information about websites.

What is a Googlebot?

Googlebots are web crawlers. These computer programs have a number of different aliases; web spiders, web robots, spiderbots, web scutters, ants, bots and automatic indexers. ‘Googlebot’ is the term given to web crawlers that index the internet specifically for Google.com. The program is designed to work online, moving from one website to the next, making copies of the content on each website as it passes through. This copied information is then passed on to a search engine which indexes the information, making searching for content online faster and easier for internet users.

Not all web crawlers are designed specifically to fulfill a role for search engines such as Google or Yahoo. Some are put to a far more annoying task – searching for and storing e-mail addresses. These bots gather personal information, which is then passed on to evil puppet masters for the purpose of spam.


Googlebots are non-physical robots, dwelling in the realm of code and programming languages. The form that a Googlebot would take in the physical realm is left to the imagination. Below are several artworks and designs that depict what a Googlebot looks like to the individual artists.

Spiderbots

The phrase, ‘world wide web’, creates an image of a spiderweb made up of information. The tendrils of webbing between each join can be viewed as links; ways to move from one website to another. The points where the web joins can be seen as being websites. It doesn’t take a big leap of imagination to envisage a robot spider crawling across the web, climbing from site to site through links, gathering information from each site.

Note that in the following images, the spiders have a different character. To some artists, spiderbots are silly, fun or humorous, to others, these bots are given a darker aspect. In other images, the siderbot is fairly expressionless, belying the fact that spiderbots, even when rendered as physical beings, are not self-aware.







Searchbots

There’s no distinct form that is implied by the term, ’searchbot’, and so artists have given these bots whatever body shape they feel fits the term. The symbol for searching on the internet is customarily an icon of a spyglass, also called a magnifying glass, and so this symbol appears in most searchbot artworks. The image of an eye is also symbolic of searching or seeking, and so it also has a tendency to pop up.



  



Googlebots


Googlebots are searchbots that are created specifically to perform tasks for Google.com’s search engine service. They are commonly called spiderbots, and so spider forms often emerge in Googlebot art.








Web crawlers are used by a number of different search engines, but you don’t need to rely solely on these bots to search the internet. You can create your own search bot here, to search for content based on your personal preferences.

Artistic Machines: Robot Art

Perfectly synchronizing the worlds of art and technology, robot artists produce artworks based on their inventors’ design preferences. If art is a form of self-expression, however, can artworks produced by non-emotional, programmed brains be considered art?

Leonel Moura

Leonel Moura, a Portuguese artist who dabbles in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, mentions some interesting catch-phrases on his website, http://www.leonelmoura.com/; “artificial art”, “artificial creativity” and “non-human art”. The reason why I found these phrases to be interesting is that I have a fairly broad mind when it comes to classifying art. In my opinion, as long as an artist is expressing an aspect of themselves, the product of this self-expression is art. The self-expression can take on the form of dance, painting, sculpture, performance or design. As long as some part of the artist remains eternally in the artwork, according to me, it’s art.
However, I struggle with the concept of robots creating “art”, even if it is “artificial art”. A robot that produces a few scribbles on a page may be able to evoke an emotional reaction from the viewer, yet is it art? What emotions, opinions and deep-seated, heart-wrenching, angst-filled issues could a robot possibly have to express through art?


ISU Genomic Robot
Leonel Moura’s genomic art robot, ISU, can produce a recognizable reproduction of the human form, using permanent ink and acrylics on Plexiglas. The robot is able to recreate a human form, but it does not recognize the human form. It has no opinions, personal experiences or ideas about the human body. Can this really be considered art?


Perhaps it is the fact that these robots are completely devoid of human emotions and experience that makes these “artworks” unique. Maybe the choice of art materials chosen by the designer can be considered a part of the expressive process of art. The inventor could have chosen brushes with colorful inks or paints, yet instead he has opted for a result that has a stark contrast – black lines on a white surface, an exaggeration of the colorless, lifeless nature of robots?


LBot (LegoBot)
Another of Moura’s creation is the LBot, aka the LegoBot. The LegoBot is an autonomous robot, working without the direct instruction of an operator. When the LegoBot senses a specific color, it draws a circle. This is a programmed reaction to specific stimuli. Human emotion is a reaction to external stimuli, with the type of reaction based in an individual’s social conditioning to the stimuli. For example, I am not afraid of spiders, so when I see a spider, I may react with caution and deliberate movements, but a person who suffers from arachnophobia, a fear of spiders, may react to the presence of a spider with disgust and fear. Our individual reactions to the same stimuli are based in our past experiences, our separate opinions of the same stimuli, and our conditioned behavioral responses. In comparison to a human being, a robot has no experiences, opinions or basic human emotions, such as fear, to draw on, and will react to stimuli according to its programming. There is no room for self-development in a robot, such as overcoming a fear or exhibiting a different reaction to the same stimuli. Moura points out that art is an expression of ‘how life could be’, not ‘how life is’, which makes me question if the LegoBot is able to create art, as it lacks imagination and creativity.




Swarm Paintings
Ants, bees and other insects that swarm, create a form of collective consciousness through pheromone trails. Because of this ‘hive mind’ or ‘hive mentality’, thousands of insects can work together as a unified entity to perform a specific task, such as protecting the nest or hive from intruders or moving the entire nest from one area to another.
In 2001, Moura created a series of Swarm Paintings. These paintings were produced by a robotic arm (CAD/CAM machine) that was connected to a computer running an ant algorithm. Using the behavioral patterns created by the ants’ movements, the robotic arm was able to reproduce a visual representation of the hive mentality of ants.





Art based on algorithms is present in nature in the form of spiderwebs, the flight of birds and the migratory routes of animals. However, even when using art materials and tools, can a recreation of these algorithms be considered art? Surely they are simply a visual representation of a mathematical formula?


Humans: Emotional, Self-aware Creators

Abstract Expressionism is an art form that is based heavily in human emotion, creativity and opinion. These paintings offer a warped perspective of the world, a way to view life as it is and as it could be in a different way. Although the artist has offered their own personal experiences, emotions and opinions through the art, the interpretation of the art; what it means to the individual, is left up to the viewer.
In this sense, Abstract Expressionism and robot art are similar. The interpretation of the artwork is created by the viewer’s reaction to the artwork, as the artist’s thoughts, ideas and opinions are not offered to the viewer. In the case of robot artists, the thoughts, ideas and opinions of the robot artists are not available because they simply don’t exist.

One can debate whether robot “art” is in fact art, but my personal conclusion is that robot art is simply the visual representation of mathematical formulas and programming codes. Human artists have the ability to express emotions and ideas through their choice of color, and the creation of texture, depth and perspective. Every mark that a human artist creates on a canvas is unique and expressive, whilst those of a robot artist tend to be almost too perfect, precise and planned. To be human is to err, and it seems that this ability to make mistakes, along with our ability to express emotions, is what makes human art so appealing.
