Funny Cartoon Paintings

Modern artists have begun to reflect the cartoon style found in animated films and comics. This modern art style is being created in both fine art mediums (such as paint or ink) and in digital art programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.

Humorous Design
Cartoon character designers exaggerate facial features and twist the proportions of the characters' bodies, creating humorous creatures that parody the human form. Often, facial features such as eyes, ears or noses will be shrunk or enlarged, creating such a gross caricature of a human face that an entirely new character is born.

Above: A cartoon painting by Brandt Peters. The main subject of the image is a female cartoon character whose face is a humorous caricature boasting a flattened head, no chin and a tiny, shrunken nose. Even the proportions of her body have been exaggerated or shrunk to complete the character's design.

Art as a Cartoon
Traditional animated cartoons and comic books feature characters that have heavy outlines and solid areas of color. With the advent of 3D animation software, these strong outlines have begun to fall away in favor of semi-realistic, 3-dimensional characters. These characters are most often reflected in the work of digital artists.

Statue of Liberty Gone Wild

The Statue of Liberty was given to the American people from the country of France in the late 1800s. The statue is a symbol of hope and freedom, and has become one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world.

A Humorous Liberation
The real Statue of Liberty wears a solemn expression and is surrounded by several symbols of serious intent such as a tablet of the law, a flaming torch and a broken chain. Photoshop artists have taken this serious lady and transformed her into a funny parody of her former self.

Stunning Surreal Photoshop Art

Surrealism means "above reality", and is an art form which depicts highly imaginative and unlikely scenes in a realistic manner. The art form began in the 1920s, decades before artists began to create digital art on computers. The rise in popularity of Photoshop paintings has inspired a renaissance of surrealism.

The Surreal World of Photoshop
Famous surrealist painter Salvador Dali (1904-1989) worked mostly in oil paint, creating crazy landscapes that shocked and delighted the art critics of his time. Now, a century after Dali's birth, digital artists can create surreal landscapes with ease, using computer arts programs such as Photoshop.

Above: The Photoshop artist has used organic shapes in place of the woman's body, using only facial features, hands and a human heart to convince the viewer that the subject in the painting is in fact human. [source]

Anything is Possible
The only limits that surrealist Photoshop artists face are the bounds of their own imagination. Photoshop paintings can be edited at any time, which means that several versions of the same art work can exist. A Photoshop painting can evolve over time without the original art being compromised.

Above: Sometimes the line between surrealism and fantasy is blurred, as both art forms describe a world in which the impossible is a reality. The Photoshop painting above shows a world in which a girl is intertwined with tree roots and branches. The painting implies that the tree is animated, and a relationship exists between the girl and the tree. [source]

Funny Photoshop Animals are Almost Human

Photoshop artists often combine human and animal trait to create funny man animal hybrids. These grinning creatures have been given human teeth to create an almost human smile.

Photoshop Smile Enhancement
The process of giving animals human characteristics is called personification. In literature, animals have been given human attributes in stories such as Watership Down and The Wind in the Willows. In visual media, animals are personified by depicting them as walking on their hind legs, or wearing human clothes. Photoshop and other image manipulation programs allow digital artists to create a photo-realistic depiction of man animal hybrids.
One of the more humorous personifications used by digital artists is the act of giving an animal a human smile. Human teeth have a distinctive shape, and while they look "normal" in a human head, they look rather silly when photoshopped into the face of an animal.

Above: As if walking around on their front paws wasn't funny enough, a photoshop artist has decided to give this pug a humorous grin to complete its performance.

Windows to the Soul
Along with human teeth, Photoshop artists have added human eyes to further personify these animals. The results are funny Photoshop animal pictures that can be just a little bit unsettling at times. Human eyes can be painted in Photoshop or cut out of existing photos of people. The trickiest part of creating a realistic eye in Photoshop is giving the eyeball correct reflections. The better the reflection on the shiny surface of the eye, the more lifelike it becomes.

Photoshop Humanoids

A humanoid is a creature that has human characteristics. The term was first used in 1912 to describe skeletons that were physically similar to, but not exactly like, human skeletons. Humanoids appear often in science fiction novels and movies, as aliens or robots that resemble humans. Distinctive human features of humanoids areopposable thumbs and a bipedal bone structure (the bone structure of creatures that walk on two legs).

Creating Alien Photoshop Humanoids

Alien designers often show aliens as having two or three fingers along with an opposable thumb. In the picture above, the creature is further personified through the use of a human facial expression and clothing that resembles those worn by Earth men.

Humanoids are often depicted as having animal features such as claws, feathers or leathery skin. The humanoid above is a biped, yet the bone structure of the head and legs resembles a demonic, alien creature. This manimal belongs solely to the world of fantasy, bearing little resemblance to any Earth creature.

Digital artists can create believable humanoids by retaining the basic structure of a human physique, while adding alien features to the structure. In the image above, the artist has elongated the character's skull and added extra alien characteristics to the head and body. Even though the result is distinctly alien, this humanoid retains the human characteristics of recognizable facial features and basic human body structure.

Designing Robotic Photoshop Humanoids

This CG art work was created with photo manipulation. The artist morphed a photograph to create a female robot humanoid. Though this character is a machine, it retains the organic essence of a human woman.

The above design is a believable, photo-realistic portrayal of a robotic humanoid woman. By using intelligent lighting techniques, the artist has managed to create a 3D feel for the character. The feminine essence of the robot is emphasized through the artist's use of exaggeration - making certain parts of the robot woman's body larger or smaller than it would realistically be on a human figure.

There are thousands of manimal, hybrid and humanoid Photoshop designs online. The images the computer graphics artists create are limited only by their imagination and their skill.

Wicked Photoshopped Animal Hybrids

Amazing and funny artwork from digital artists around the world, depicting what kind of a creature would emerge if two or more animals were hybridized.

Digital art programs such as Adobe Photoshop allow designers and artists to create photo-realistic images from scratch. These programs include the design tools needed to create a hybrid of two images, such as an animal hybrid. Design software packages like these enable designers to create a variety of extraordinary images with the art of photo manipulation.
